Where are Ding Dong Cottages?
Bal Cottage, The Loft and The Cabin, are situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where rabbits gambol, buzzards hover and you may sometimes glimpse a fox, badger or barn owl. Although remote in feeling, the cottages are only five miles North of Penzance and within easy reach of St ives, Land's End, Marazion and Mousehole. They are ideally placed for walks over the surrounding moors and countryside, with many paths winding amongst gorse, heather and moorland flowers. It is even possible to see the sea on both coasts from our high vantage point; the North coast being only a couple of miles walk over the moors from here.
Nearby is the Nine Maidens stone circle, (unfortunate maidens turned to stone for dancing into the Sabbath), the Mên Scryfa, Mên-an-Tol and other ancient remains. A couple of miles to the West are Chûn Castle and Lanyon Quoit. A similar distance East lies the remarkable Iron Age settlement of Chycauster, one of the best preserved sites of that period in Europe. Nearer to hand are the impressive ruins of the Ding Dong and Greenburrow engine houses, massively built from the native granite - almost the only visible remains of one of the most successful tin and copper mines of earlier days. Where once all must have been industry and toil, nature has reclaimed the landscape for herself. Only the ruined engine houses remain; familiar local landmarks, visible for miles. The Ding Dong Mines complex has recently been designated as part of the The Cornwall and West Devon World Heritage Site.
The cottages provide a perfect base for exploring West Cornwall, an area richly endowed with magical gardens, antiquities, art galleries and museums, not forgetting the dramatically beautiful coastline only a short drive or walk away. The recently established Tate in the West at St Ives is a popular attraction to visit, as is the Minack cliff-top theatre at Porthcurno, now including a museum and other new facilities; surely one of the world's most spectacularly placed open-air venues for musical and dramatic performances.
Trips to the Isles of Scilly are possible daily by steamship or helicopter from Penzance or by fixed wing flights from Land's End Airport near St Just. Various festivals, exhibitions and other public events are held throughout the year in St Ives, Penzance, Helston, Padstow and we are less than an hours drive from the stunning Eden Project at St Austell.
"The Loft" and "Bal Cottage" are both spacious enough and well equipped to spend time "at home" very comfortably, if you feel inclined, and there are of course no restrictions on times of coming or going. "The Cabin" is also available and may be taken either as overflow from the other cottages or as a self contained option for two.
We are sorry that we do not accept pets in any of our properties.
